Honestly, the past several months… God has shattered my heart by hearing students, young adults, and little girls say these lines:
“I want to be like her.”
“Their relationship is straight-up goals.”
“I need to change my wardrobe to fit in.”
“If I change this part of me then I would be accepted.”
“I need to be apart of this so people can notice me.”
“I have to do this and that to feel like I belong.”
“God won’t notice me if I am not a part of something huge.”
All of these lines… BROKE. MY. HEART.
Too many girls want to follow a trend and it’s sad… be you! You don’t have to follow everyone else. You don’t have to be anyone else but you!
And that is the moment when God revealed how I do the same exact thing. I am guilty as charged. I have been like every single girl who has said each of those lines.
I have compared myself to every girl. I have followed several trends in order to stand out. I have compared myself to other bloggers and felt discouraged because I felt that no one will hear my voice. I have compared God’s love story for my life to someone else’s love story because it appears insta-perfect. I have compared my wardrobe to other hipsters across the world. I have compared myself to be apart of huge things when God had been whispering, “this isn’t what I had in mind for you.”
Recently, God convicted my heart that I do not have to be like everyone else. I do not have to follow the trend. My ministry and calling upon my life doesn’t have to look like what others think or say. I do not have to believe everything that everyone else believes. I do not have to do everything that everyone else is doing. I do not have to have an “insta-perfect” type of relationship or lifestyle like someone else. I do not have to dress like everyone else. I do not have to be anyone else other than me.
For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
It is time we kill the trend of our comparison and the constant dissatisfaction of ourselves. It is time to love ourselves and let our identity become fully rooted in who Christ created us to be.
If we continue to allow the trends to continue trending in our lives… we will lose our identity because it was not fully rooted in who Christ intended us to be. Trust me, I’ve done it. I am always relearning who I am because I allowed a trend, a comparison thought, or an opinion to mold me into someone that I am not.
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7
You do not have to allow a trend to define who you are. The trend doesn’t own you.
Be you. Be authentic. Be real. You don’t have to be like everyone else. You are called to be set apart from the rest. You do not have to be like anyone else other than you.
Sure, maybe you’re thinking, “Jen, I am boring. I am not as cool as someone else… I will never fit in!”
Let me be real, raw, and honest… WHO CARES?! You are you! No one could be you even if they tried. They would be lacking the very thing that God created you to be. Don’t follow the trend and try to be someone that you’re not. If you allow the trend to continue trending in your life… You are going to be led by people and cool things, not God. God doesn’t create identical robots. He created real, unique, and authentic people who can be themselves and who God created them to be.
Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.
2 Corinthians 10:12
Dear one, whoever is reading this:
Be you. And only you.
Stop pretending to be someone you’re not because God did not create you to be someone else… He created you to be YOU and ONLY you. His heart breaks when he sees you trying to be someone that you’re not. He aches to see you constantly trying to fit in with the world (whether that is with believers or not). He wants to see the real you so He can use you for His purpose… not someone else’s purpose. Don’t lose yourself in a fake identity. Kill the trend and be authentic again. Be you and love the young woman that God created you to be. Fall completely in love with her because when you do… You will see His plans unfold and your true identity will shine with full radiance because of Christ within you. Be you; NOT her. Kill the trend and be the woman that God created you to be.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.
